What is ChatGPT and how can it help in HR?

What does ChatGPT stand for? ChatGPT stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It’s an AI technology language model created by OpenAI. OpenAI is a company that was founded by Sam Altman (Former President of Y combinator), Reid Hoffman (Founder of LinkedIn), Jessica Livingston (Founding partner of Y combinator), Elon Musk (no introduction needed here), Llya Sutskever (Chief Scientist at OpenAI), Peter Theil (Cofounder PayPal) and others who pledged more than $ 1 Billion for its development. In terms of strength, it is the 5th most powerful supercomputer in the world. So, since few of the smartest people on the planet are behind this project, it has made such a huge splash and of course, it’s very good.

Simply speaking, ChatGPT uses natural language processing (NLP). It has been trained on a large body of text from a variety of sources like Wikipedia, Books, News Articles, Scientific journals, etc. It doesn’t access a database but bases the patterns it learned while massively reading up on all available data. It's so good that the ChatGPT website has been visited a total of 1 billion times so far and gets 25 million daily visits from users across the world.

In recent years, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in human resources (HR) has become increasingly popular. But ChatGPT is the next level of the evolution of AI. It has mostly all the answers, what it needs is someone to ask the right question.

We have tested and used ChatGPT ourselves on multiple fronts and here are some things that we think HR professionals can use it for

1.       Any questions on HR/Situations/Issues that you face

ChatGPT is like a friend that knows stuff. So, in HR and in other fields, any question that you have can be asked. Example –

a.       Can you help design an incentive structure for salespeople in an FMCG Company

b.       Or can you help design a policy for travel claims for employees of a technology company?

c.       Or how can I handle an employee who has an integrity issue?

Now note that while ChatGPT will give you the skeleton for the policy, the specifics like, who to include, what claim amount to give under what situations, etc need to be designed by HR. So, while it helps, in no way can it replace actual HR professionals.

2. Function-wise List of things to do:

Here are a few suggestive topics that you can ask ChatGPT function-wise in HR-

a.  Recruitment – Where to find the right talent, conduct initial interviews, offer data and insights into hiring, Streamline processes, Write JDs, Email templates for candidates/interviewers, Follow up on emails, etc.

b.   HR operations – Reply to employees on queries, Assist with compliance,

c.   Learning and Development – Content creation, Personalize learning experiences, Data analysis, Design framework for TNA, Overall Strategy

d.  Compensation and Benefit – Way to benchmark Compensation, Benefit education to employees, and Total rewards communication.

And more.

3.       Staying ahead of the competition:

ChatGPT can help you generate Insights on Global HR trends like AI in HR or working in the metaverse. This will help in staying ahead of others by making the appropriate changes within your organization that others have not come up with.

Overall, while ChatGPT is a great tool for HR professionals to make their HR processes more effective, how much context and clarity you provide in your questions is more important.
